We Be Bowlin'

That pond-hockey feeling

As anyone who really knows me can tell you, my hatred for Detroit’s red-winged wheel is unparalleled–and this is coming from a guy that deals with the Nazis and SS on a daily basis.

But even I can’t deny that the CBC (like the BBC, only Canadian, eh?) has made a pretty damn sweet commercial featuring the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. It retraces, at times literally, how these two teams made it to this year’s cup finals again, after Detroit beat Pittsburgh in 6 games last year. Series by series, goal by goal, it does so, and it manages to capture the feel of hockey better than any other commercial I’ve ever seen. Enjoy.

Simeon Varlamov’s save is probably the most impressive save since Patrick Roy’s (similar, but 2 feet in the air) save on Wes Walz in the first round of the 2003 playoffs.

I was watching this live last night, and jumped about a foot in the air when it happened. Even though my team lost, it’s just amazing.

The Bloodiest Fight In Hockey

This month is the 12th anniversary of the bloodiest fight in Hockey history, taking place between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. A year after the upstart, 1st year Avalanche upset the Red Wings in the Western Conference Finals–after the Red Wings had the most wins in history during the regular season and were trying to erase a 50 year championship drought–the Wings waited out two games in Denver before attacking Avalanche players at the first game back in Detroit since the Avalanche eliminated them from the playoffs, and Avs forward Claude Lemieux (#22) broke Kris Draper’s face with an awful check into the boards.

Something You've Never Seen Before

In all my years of watching hockey, I have never seen this before. Dominic Moore of the Maple Leafs (and brother of tragic Av Steve Moore) gets a shorthanded breakaway after breaking his stick. You can’t handle the puck with your hands, and you can’t kick a puck into the net for a goal. What do you do?
